What is Functional Medicine?
Functional Medicine is a patient-centered, science-based approach to healthcare that looks beyond symptoms to identify the root causes of illness. Instead of focusing only on treating disease, Functional Medicine seeks to understand how genetics, environment, and lifestyle all interact to influence long-term health.
Through advanced testing, in-depth consultations, and a personalized treatment plan, Functional Medicine helps restore balance in the body. The goal is not just to manage conditions but to promote healing, optimize wellness, and support lasting vitality.
In other words, it’s medicine that treats you as a whole person—body, mind, and spirit—so you can feel and live your best.

What Our Patients Are Saying
Questions? We've got answers
Choosing a new doctor or trying functional medicine for the first time can bring up lots of questions. We’ve made it simple—here are the answers to the things our patients ask us most often.
How is Functional Medicine Different from Conventional Medicine, and Will You Be My Primary Care Physician?
Conventional medicine often focuses on diagnosing conditions and managing symptoms—usually through medication or procedures. Functional medicine takes a broader, systems-based approach. We look for the root causes of illness by considering lifestyle, environment, and underlying biological imbalances. The goal is long-term healing and prevention, not just symptom control.
For example, instead of simply prescribing medication for high blood pressure, a functional medicine physician may also evaluate genetics, metabolomics, stress response, sleep, gut health, and nutrition—recognizing how all these systems interact and contribute to your condition.
As for primary care, most patients keep their existing PCP while adding functional medicine to their care team. However, we also offer a concierge-style Direct Primary Care program, where your primary physician is also a functional medicine expert. This gives you the flexibility to choose: functional medicine only, concierge primary care only, or a combination of both.
What’s included in my first appointment?
Your first visit is a 60-minute consult with a board-certified MD (telehealth or in-person). We take a deep dive into your history, symptoms, medications/supplements, lifestyle, and goals; review prior labs; and, when in person, perform a focused exam. You’ll leave with initial clinical impressions, a prioritized problem list, and a testing plan (routine labs through LabCorp, Quest, or HealthLab; specialty options with clear pricing and coverage review).
If you choose to move forward, we can begin the same day with specialty testing, a personalized supplement plan, and a protocol-based approach. Health coaching, nutrition counseling, and your broader care plan may also be deployed at this stage.
From there, you decide whether to continue in our membership-based care (functional medicine, concierge primary care, or a combined program), where ongoing protocols, prescriptions/hormones if indicated, and close follow-up are provided.
Do you accept insurance?
We do not bill insurance for our services. Our membership is direct-pay, which allows us to provide longer visits, personalized care, and advanced testing without the restrictions of traditional insurance. Many patients are able to use HSA or FSA funds toward their membership—check with your plan to confirm eligibility.
For labs:
Routine labs (CBC, CMP, thyroid, cholesterol, etc.) are usually covered and billed through your insurance at national labs like LabCorp, Quest, or HealthLab.
Specialty functional medicine labs vary: some may bill insurance directly, but many are out-of-network and require patient payment.
Before ordering any test, we review coverage and pricing with you so there are no surprises. Whenever possible, we use insurance-eligible options first and clearly explain which specialty tests may involve additional out-of-pocket costs.
Do I need to live locally to become a patient? Do you offer telehealth visits?
No — you don’t need to live nearby to receive care from The Functional MDs. We offer secure telehealth visits for patients in states where we are licensed, as well as in-person appointments at our Indiana practice.
Telehealth patients consistently achieve outcomes equal to those seen in person. Functional medicine is uniquely well-suited to video visits: we take a detailed health history, order advanced diagnostics, and design personalized protocols that can be followed remotely.
Routine labs can be completed locally at LabCorp, Quest, or HealthLab. Specialty labs are shipped directly to your home with clear instructions, and prescriptions (when appropriate) are sent to your local pharmacy. This makes care seamless whether you live across town or several states away.
Currently licensed states: Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Washington.
Licenses in progress: Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, California.
If you live in one of our licensed states, you can receive complete care through telehealth. We update this list regularly as our reach expands.
Do you create the same plan for every patient?
No. Each treatment plan is tailored to your unique biology, lifestyle, and health goals. No two patients ever receive the exact same approach.
When will I start to see results?
Each patient is different, but many begin to notice improvements within weeks as they follow their personalized treatment plan.
